HALM History
Halm Industries Co., Inc. was founded in September 1945 in the borough of Queens, New York. The company was started by four gentlemen who were employed at Sperry Gyroscope company in Lake Success, New York during the war years of 1941-1945. The gentlemens names were Hallahan, Aronson, Lyon and Mortimer. Using the first initials of their last names formed the basis for the company name of Halm.

Halm started in a small store in Jackson Heights, Queens and subsequently built the plant they now occupy in Glen Head, Long Island in 1952. In the early stages of Halm, many different Automatic Machines were designed and manufactured. In 1949, Halm was approached to design a feeder to feed micro film carrier cards. The feeder that was designed was a continuous vacuum type and was the beginning of Halms automatic equipment to feed documents at high speeds.
First Company car
The first machine utilizing this feeder was the automatic counter bander which counted out a predetermined number of envelopes and applied wide heat-sealable cellophane band around the pack. The next step was to incorporate this feeder on a printing press and the first Jet Press was manufactured to print envelopes at a very high speed.

1950 |
Halm developed a single color letterpress machine model JP-1A.
This machine had a 3 diameter type cylinder and used flexible
rubber or photopolymer plates. The maximum size of this press
is 9 x 12.
|
|
1958 |
A larger letterpress was made, the model JP-6. This model had a 6
diameter type cylinder and a maximum size of 12 x 15. It enabled
HALM to supply a machine that could print from flexible rubber or
photopolymer plates, lead type and also consecutive numbering.
|
|
1967 |
Halm developed their first standard offset machine. This was a
single color unit with a 3 diameter plate cylinder. It used a
conventional molleton dampening system. Maximum size: 9 x 12.
|
|
1968 |
Halm developed the two-color offset with alcohol dampening
systems. A few years later, the mechanism to do perfecting was
added to the machine.
|
|
1974 |
The Super Jet was designed and manufactured. This machine had
a 6 diameter plate cylinder, which doubled the printing capacity of
the standard offset machine up to 12 x 18. This machine also had
two feeders, which gave it more versatility.
|
|
1978 |
Halm created a four-color machine to do process printing for
the first day stamp issue envelopes. The maximum size of this four
color is 9 x 12 Ύ. In 1990, a wider four-color was made with a
maximum size of 9 x 15. |
|
2000 |
In 2000, Halm introduced the first five-color envelope perfector. Four color UV process on the top and one color offset perfector.
|
|
2004 |
Halm continued innovations with the introduction of the Jet Press Plus XL and Super Jet Plus XL printing presses. These innovative machines operate in one mode. They offer high quality printing, high speed operation and are two times more productive than the machines they replace. |
|
2006 |
Halm decided to take the new generation of Jet presses that they introduced in 2006 a step further by adding a new Multiple Purpose Feeder (MPF). This feeder can run board-bags, gusset envelopes, brochures pockets and also envelopes in different sizes, paper quality and weights. |
While printing equipment was Halms main product, many different machines were designed through the years. In 1955, Halm manufactured a complete line of equipment for a major electric company to do the assembly of circuit breakers. This line included coil winders, soldering, staking and complete tube tripping mechanism assembly machines. In 1958, Halm developed automatic capping equipment for major electronic companies to assemble resistors and capacitors at high speeds.
Halm has also been involved in designing machines for a major game manufacturer.
As Halm continued to grow through the years, additions were added onto their Glen Head plant approximately every three years. Sales/Service offices were opened in Los Angeles in 1970. Chicago in 1975, and Atlanta in 1983. Halm discontinued all foreign dealer agreements in 1980 and established an international affiliate company in the Netherlands, which services all countries outside of the Americas. The International offices expanded to Sydney Australia in 2000 and France in 2004.
Look for future expansion and new product developments in the future.
